Per capita consumption of sugar and similar products in Norway 1979-2020

Since 1999, the per capita consumption of sugar and similar products decreased strongly in Norway. Overall, it amounted to a consumption volume of roughly 24 kilograms per Norwegian in 2019. In 2018, manufacturers operating in the cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery industry generated a revenue of approximately 3.5 billion Norwegian kroner.

 Who is the largest player on the sugar confectionary market? 

Mondelez, the American confectionery, food and beverage company, had a share of 37 percent on the Norwegian sugar confectionery and pastilles market. It was ahead of the confectionery producer Nidar, which belongs the Orkla Group from Norway (market share of 22 percent) as well as the Swedish confectionery company Cloetta (market share of eight percent). Thus, in 2019, Mondelez was the largest player on this market.  

 International trade 

When looking at the international trade in sugar confectionery, it is noticeable that Norway imported a way higher value into the country than it exported from the country. In 2019, the import value of sugar confectionery into Norway amounted to 754 million Norwegian kroner, while the export value was around 48 million Norwegian kroner.
