Domestic tourism spending in France 2019-2022

In 2022, domestic tourism spending in France increased by roughly 1.6 percent compared to 2019, the year prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, the expenditure by domestic visitors in the country amounted to approximately 122.7 billion euros in 2022.

Domestic vs. inbound tourism in France

While the expenditure by domestic travelers surpassed pre-pandemic levels, international tourism spending in France remained below the figure reported in 2019 but showed strong signs of recovery, amounting to more than 57 billion euros in 2022. Both before and after the impact of the health crisis, France topped the ranking of the countries with the highest number of inbound tourist arrivals worldwide.

Paris' contribution to tourism in France

The French capital attracts millions of domestic travelers and visitors from abroad every year, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and popular attractions. In 2022, the number of tourist arrivals to Paris and the Île-de-France region, including domestic and international visitors, reached more than 44 million. That year, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Paris' GDP was expected to exceed 30 billion euros.
