Motorway technology and information devices in Italy 2015-2018, by type of device

As of 2015, main or national roads in Italy had a total length 21,686 kilometers. Overall, the Italian national motorway system was almost 6,943 kilometers in length, whereas the 'secondary' or 'regional road' network accounted for approximately 156 thousand kilometers.

The network

  One of the longest motorways in Italy was the A1, connecting Milan to Naples (803.5 km), followed by the A14 Bologna-Taranto (781.4 km), and the A22, connecting the Brenner pass to Modena (314 km). The Italian motorway system counts three major alpine tunnels. The longest is the Fréjus tunnel (12.8km), followed by the Mont Blanc and St. Bernardo tunnels.

Security first

  Security and information devices played an important role when it came to highways. According to the data, the number of motorways video cameras increased from 7,258 to 8,858 in the period from 2015 to 2018. Additionally, the number of ice detectors increased from 402 to 424 over the same period. Lastly, weather stations increased too from 594 in 2015 to 611 in 2018.
