This statistic describes the results of a survey among north and central Indian households about the share of illegal marriages among men and women in 2013-14. For instance, the share of marriage among women below 18 years old in Punjab was around four percent, while for men below 21 years old in the same state, it was close to 11 percent.

Note: The legal age for marriage in India is 18 years for women and 21 years for men, although there are exceptions under the Muslim and Hindu Marriage Act respectively.
