Global bioplastic production capacities by material 2023

The global production capacities of bioplastics was 2.18 million metric tons in 2023. Of this total, the biodegradable polymer Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) accounted for 4.6 percent. By 2028, PBAT is projected to account for only 1.3 percent of the global bioplastics production capacity. By 2028, biodegradable bioplastics such as PBAT, PBS, and PLA, are projected to represent 61.9 percent of bioplastics production capacities.
