Fixed broadband: ARPU development in Europe 2011-2018

Providers of fixed broadband in Europe have been able to count on an extremely stable monthly amount of average revenue per user (ARPU) with the figure hovering at, or slightly below, 22 euros since 2010. Mobile broadband ARPU has fallen considerably in recent years, from 19.2 euros in 2011 to 14.8 euros in 2018.

Fixed broadband: ADSL on top, but on the way out

ADSL is still the most common type of fixed broadband connection in Europe, utilizing copper telephone lines for the transmission of data. Although it is affordable and suitable for many home users, ADSL has serious speed limitations. It is becoming a less attractive option as fibre optic networks become larger, more accessible for consumers, and more affordable. FTTP connections, involving fibre optic cables running direct to the premises of the internet subscriber, went from having 7 million connections in 2011, to reach 34 million connections by 2018. ADSL fell from 104 million connections, to just 67 million connections over the same time frame.

Fixed broadband connecting the world

The number of fixed broadband connections around the world has increased significantly over the past decade. Whereas in 2008 there were 411 million fixed broadband subscriptions worldwide, that figure climbed to an estimated 1.075 billion subscriptions in 2018. There was not a single year in which the number of subscriptions fell between 2005 and 2018.
