Number of approved films in France 2006-2015, by director’s gender

This statistic shows the number of approved films in France from 2006 to 2015, broken down by director’s gender. In 2015, 232 films approved in France were directed by men. The total number of feature films produced in France in 2015, including those that were minority co-produced, was 300. That year, 63 films were directed by women, which constitutes 21 percent of all films produced that year. In comparison, a total of 203 films were produced in 2006, out of which 35 were directed by women. Thus, women's share in film production in 2006 was 17.2 percent. During the given period, the number of films by female directors increased by 80 percent, while the number of film productions by male directors in the same period grew by 42.3 percent. The overall number of films produced by women from 2006 to 2015 was 506. This constitutes approximately 20 percent of all films produced in France during this period. Generally, the decade in consideration shows an increasing trend in the number of films made by women with only one exception in 2014. The strongest rise in the number of films made by women was in 2015, at an increase of 10 films.
