by Statista Research Department, last edited Feb 5, 2019
Household consumer perception on price levels in India 2015-2018 This statistic represents the results of a survey about the consumer perception on price levels across Indian households between December 2015 and June 2018. As of June 2018, about 88.8 percent of respondents thought the price level had increased in the country. The Indian government announced the decision to demonetize all 500 and 1,000 rupee banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi series in the beginning of November 2016 in order to curtail shadow economy and crack down on counterfeit cash that supposedly funded illegal activity and terrorism. The sudden announcement led to weeks of cash shortage and created a significant disruption of the country's economy.
