Global interconnectedness and air transportation

Since the 2000s, global air freight traffic increased to a certain extent exponentially, reaching over 102 million metric tons freight in 2019. Similarly, the size of the cargo airline industry worldwide developed progressively over the recent five years, generating 114 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. As the air transportation industry is growing, so does the market-making process. To keep up with transforming market dynamics, logistics firms evolve strategically. To expand purposefully, companies either merge together or acquire a different company to enter into different markets. Globally the merger and acquisition deals volume of transportation and logistics firms somewhat increased with a fluctuating trend over the recent years, reaching 143 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. When it comes to the leading firms, Federal Express (FedEx), Emirates and Qatar Airways were the leading airlines by freight tonne-kilometers.

FedEx

Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, FedEx Corporation is a multinational American delivery services provider. Since its foundation in 1971, the company experienced a promising growth path. By means of strong industrial strategy and market adaptation, FedEx became one of the largest logistics company globally. Over the recent decade, FedEx Corporation’s revenue almost doubled, reaching roughly 69.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. As the leading air cargo company worldwide, FedEx sustains a large aircraft fleet for its global operations and continues to expand or restructure its existing fleet. For instance, in 2019, Boeing delivered 22 aircraft to FedEx. The aircraft fleet size of FedEx remained somewhat steady at around 670 aircraft from 2011 to 2019.
