In Spain, the eco-friendly supermarket Veritas had the highest number of supermarkets with organic produce with its 32 stores. They were followed by the Catalonia-based Tribu Woki and by the Madrid-based Bio c' Bon as one of the leaders of the sector, with four and three stores in Spain in 2022. The popularity of organic food has prompted the opening of new business lines, with supermarkets specializing in this sector popping up across Europe.
The organic food sector in Europe
Germany was the European country that featured most revenues of organic products according to the latest studies. This country generated a revenue of over 14 billion euros, with France and Italy rounding off the other leading countries with organic food sales of 12.7 and 3.9 billion euros respectively. The popularity of organic foods in Spain still had to catch on in comparison to its European counterparts, with revenues amounting to approximately 2.5 billion. The per capita consumption of organic products stood at 53.4 euros per capita in Spain, whereas the European Union average totted up 101.8 euros per person.

In terms of generalist food retailers, the Valencia-based chain Mercadona took up nearly one quarter of the total market in Spain in 2020. Spain’s leading supermarket has done nothing but increase its annual sales over the recent years, which amounted to approximately 23.3 billion euros in 2019. The second supermarket in the ranking was the global French retailer Carrefour, which held 8.6 percent of the market in 2019.
