Italy: frequency of eating pasta in 2017

On average, how often do you eat pasta?

by Daniela Coppola, last edited Sep 13, 2019
Italy: frequency of eating pasta in 2017 63 percent of Italian respondents said they eat pasta either every day or almost every day. No country in Europe consumes so much pasta: Italians eat about 23.5 kg pasta in a year. 27 percent of respondents stated they had pasta multiple times a week. By contrast, for one in ten respondents eating pasta was a weekly occurrence.
 Most popular pasta

The most widespread pasta brand in Italy is Barilla, which can be found in approximately 98 percent of supermarkets. Private label pasta is very popular as well, followed by the brand De Cecco. Italians prefer dry pasta, which holds 86 percent of whole volume share and, more specifically, consumers choose durum wheat pasta as their most favorite pasta type.

 New tendencies in the market

The sales volume of gluten-free pasta has been growing in the last years. The leading brand for gluten-free pasta sales in pharmacies is Dr. Schär, whose sales value amounts to 5,3 million euros. In this category, Barilla ranks only fourth. The production of organic pasta increased significantly as well: within a few years, the production value of dry organic pasta had doubled, accounting for 48 million euros as of 2016.
