Refugee population in Indonesia 2011-2019

In 2019, there were approximately 10.3 thousand refugees residing in Indonesia. This increase in refugee numbers was largely due to the strict immigration policies in Australia. Since 2013, Australia has implemented a policy of "turning back" and denying entry to boats carrying migrants. The few migrants in boats that do make it were sent to offshore detention centers in Nauru and Papua New Guinea. This has left many refugees and asylum-seekers stranded in Indonesia, which served as a departure point for migrants hoping to sail to Australia.
