As in other European countries, the number of electric cars in use in Sweden strongly increased in the last decade. While there were 129 electric cars registered in 2008, the number amounted to more than 16 thousand as of 2018. According to a forecast, the rechargeable vehicle stock will continue to grow to roughly 133 thousand in 2020.
Electric car charging stations in Sweden
Along with the growth of electric vehicles, the available infrastructure of charging stations of PEVs (plug-in and electric vehicles) also increased. While the number of charging stations amounted to roughly 500 in Sweden in 2012, nearly six thousand charging stations were recorded in 2018. In that regard, the normal charging station (less than 22 kilowatt) is still the most common one, but the amount of fast charging stations is on the rise.
Sweden’s large electric car market
In 2018, Sweden had the third largest market share of newly registered electric vehicles in Europe. 1.8 percent of all battery electric cars and six percent of all plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Europe were registered in Sweden. In general, electric cars are very popular in the Nordic countries.
