Share of Italians who did not participate in cultural activities 2020-2021, by region

In 2021, the share of nonparticipation in cultural activities over the previous 12 months increased sharply across all Italian regions. That is most likely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with museums, cinemas, music venues, and similar cultural institutions closing for several months due to the restrictions enforced in the first two years of the health crisis. Overall, the share of nonparticipation in Italy was higher in the Southern regions. In 2021, Campania reported the highest figure, at 52.5 percent, while another six Southern regions followed on the list.
