Level of trust in CNN in the United States as of April 2018

In a survey held in April 2018, around 22 percent of Americans said that they found CNN to be a very untrustworthy source of news and information. Opinions regarding the network’s trustworthiness were highly varied with an additional 24 percent finding it to be trustworthy and 32 percent calling it neither trustworthy or untrustworthy.

CNN

CNN is a pay television channel founded in the 1980s, which is currently owned by AT&T. It is one of the most popular news networks in the U.S. and has spawned successful affiliate networks around the world. Nearly half of all Americans report that they watch the network, and the majority find it to be at least somewhat credible as a source for news. The station is viewed by some as more liberal-leaning in terms of political spin meaning that Democrats are much more likely to tune in than their Republican counterparts.

Fake news

Coined by Donald Trump during the 2016 election cycle, the term ‘fake news’ is often used by the president and his supporters to describe news stories or even entire news networks which they believe to be spreading false information. Over 50 percent of Americans believe that online news websites regularly report fake news stories, while only nine percent believe that fake news is not reported. It is difficult to determine whether these claims are aimed at true falsities or are primarily encouraged by political affiliation or a lack of understanding about the topic at hand.
