The annual number of registered asylum applications worldwide skyrocketed from 2013 to 2015, which must be seen in relation with the Syrian Civil War and the high number of people fleeing the country as a result. The number then peaked in 2022, reaching 2.9 million applications, partly as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that year.
