In 2020, museums and similar cultural institutions in Italy had to close to the public for several months, as emergency orders were put in place to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, the net income of most State museums in Italy fell sharply in 2020 over the previous year. Campania and Lazio were the regions recording the highest drop, as the net income of State cultural institutions in these regions decreased by roughly 82 percent and 81 percent, respectively, over 2019.
