North Korea's share of military expenditure in GDP 2018-2022
In 2022, North Korea's military spending accounted for over 33 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP). Prior to this year, North Korea thus ranked first in the world in terms of military spending as a percentage of GDP. While Ukraine has now overtaken the country, it did still have the highest military expenditure per capita that year, at over 8.1 thousand U.S. dollars per person.
