Depending on the sector, “Made in Italy” products are known all around the globe. Thus, Italian companies profit greatly from exports and sales abroad. For example, Italian companies active in the fashion industry generate the vast majority of their turnover thanks to exported goods. Moreover, a closer look at the sector reveals that some of the leading Italian companies earn up to 96 percent of their total turnover outside of the domestic market.
A struggling sector
Despite boasting some of the most famous brands and some of the most successful fashion companies in the world, the Italian wearing apparel manufacturing is not performing as well as it used to do. Due to relocation of production facilities and increasing competition from foreign companies, the production value of domestic wearing apparel manufacturing has decreased overall in recent years and, as a consequence, so has the overall turnover of the sector.
In the first semester of 2017, the biggest importers of Italian apparel were France, Switzerland and the United States. While exports to both France and Switzerland generated a value of over two billion euros, exports to the US generated about 1.6 billion euros in revenue.
