Number of households in London England 2008/2009-2017/2018, by tenure This statistic displays the number of households in London, England between 2008/2009 and 2017/2018, listed by type of tenure. The number of people buying houses with a mortgage decreased steadily between 2008/2009 and 2016/2017; from 965 thousand households to 773 thousand, however, it increased to 915 thousand in 2017/2018. The number of private renters, on the other hand, has seen an overall growth with its peak in 2016/2017 when over one million households were privately rented. The number decreased slightly to 0.9 million in 2017/2018.
