Brazil: popular consultation on the independence of southern states 2016-2017

The statistic shows the results of a non-binding popular consultation carried out in October of 2016 and 2017 in the southern Brazilian states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to find out about voters' opinion regarding a potential political separation of Brazil's southern region from the rest of the country. When asked whether they would support the formation of an independent country among the three most southern Brazilian states, more than 350,600 voters voters answered in the positive, down from over 590,600 affirmative votes a year earlier.
