This timeline highlights the annual number of index futures trades on the Italian Derivatives Market (IDEM) from 2007 to 2017. In the period 2007-2016, despite slight fluctuations, the number of trading transactions increased gradually from around 3.2 million units as of 2007 to about 7.4 million units in 2016. *The IDEM (Italian Derivatives Market) is part of Borsa Italiana and it allows trades of futures contracts on indices, equities and commodities such as electricity, as well as mini contracts.

Index futures are futures contracts on a stock or financial index, i.e. legal agreements, generally made on the trading floor of a futures exchange, to buy or sell a particular commodity or financial instrument at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future. Index futures are the primary way of trading stock indices.

A trade is a business event in which two parties agree to enter into a contract or contracts. It is not to be confused with a contract, which is a legal agreement between two parties.
