Depressive disorders are mental disorders characterized by long episodes of low mood. Common symptoms include low self-esteem, loss of interest in normally enjoyable activities, low energy, pain without a clear cause and, in severe cases, psychosis, delusions and hallucinations. A family history of the condition, major life changes, certain medications, chronic health problems, and substance abuse are among its most common risk factors.
