Kidney transplantation was the most common organ transplant in Spain in 2020, with approximately 2.7 thousand procedures. Doctors also performed a total of approximately one thousand liver transplants, 278 heart transplants, 336 lung transplants, 73 pancreas transplants and four intestinal transplants. Organ donation can be given through both a deceased and living donor if blood and oxygen are flowing through the organs until the time of recovery to ensure viability.
Spain: leader in organ donation
In 2019, Spain had the highest rate of deceased donors in Europe. The rate of organ donation, including donation after brain death (DBD) and after cardiac death (DCD), was 49.6 per million population. Finland experienced the largest increase in the rate of organ donation between 2018 and 2019, going from 21.3 to 25.9 donors per million population. Croatia, on the other hand, suffered quite a significant drop in organ donation in 2019 relative to the previous year,but it still had the third highest rate of deceased organ donation in Europe.

Spain has increased its rate of both kidney and liver transplant procedures in recent years. The Mediterranean country topped the European list of kidney transplantations, with a rate of 73.8 per million population in 2019. With regards to liver transplantations, Spain ranked second on the list with a rate of 26.4 procedures per million, figure only overtaken by Croatia, which featured a rate of 30 liver transplantations per million population in 2019.
