Biggest banks in the Netherlands 2015-2018, by total assets

ING's total assets grew from 845 billion euros in 2015 to more than 885 billion euros in 2018, maintaining its crown of largest bank in the Netherlands. Rabobank and ABN AMRO, the other two members of the traditional "big three" in the country, followed with assets worth of 570 billion euros and 381 billion euros respectively. In the Netherlands, a few large institutions dominate the domestic financial markets. In 2018, for example, the five largest Dutch credit institutions, which include the mentioned ING, Rabobank and ABN AMRO, held approximately 85 percent of the total assets.

What is the market size of banks in the Netherlands?

In 2018, there were 41 banks in the Netherlands. ING, Rabobank and ABN AMRO could all be found in the top five of banks with the most bank branches, but none of them topped that ranking. In January 2019, RegioBank (a brand of De Volksbank) had 476 bank offices. This may sound like a lot but note that the total number of bank branches in the Netherlands was twice as small as the number reached in Belgium, as online banking lead Dutch banks to close their offices in recent years.

Does the Netherlands have any online banks?

In the Netherlands, both “established” banks as well as Fintech companies actively promote the use of online banking features. In 2018, the apps of both ING and Rabobank ranked among the most popular smartphone apps of the country. An example of Dutch Fintech efforts in online banking is Bunq, a mobile start-up with a banking license in the Netherlands. The company created an app which connects online banking with social activities as can be found in an application like WhatsApp. The app is connected to the contact list on one's mobile phone. After depositing money from your bank account on the account of Bunq it is then possible to use the application to send payment requests to your friends, to app them money or to make special chat groups. The online bank made a loss of nine million euros in 2017.
