Japan: number of self-employed workers in the fishing sector

In 2020, approximately 76 thousand workers were operating under self-employment status for Japanese fisheries, the lowest number of the past decade. Within the observed period, self-employment numbers in this field peaked in 2011 at almost 112 thousand independent fishers, but figures have decreased steadily in the following years.
The total number of people, including self-employed and hired workers, engaged in the marine fishery and aquaculture industry in Japan dropped to around 135.6 thousand in 2020.
