In 2022, New York was the U.S. metropolitan area with the highest number of single-family homes at risk of storm surge. The reconstruction cost value (RCV) for such residences in the metro area was estimated at roughly 370 billion U.S. dollars. In another four metropolitan areas in the country reconstruction costs were also expected to surpass 100 billion dollars. Storm surge refers to the unusual rise in seawater during a storm or hurricane, which can result in fatalities and severe property damage.
