Levels of support for fracking in the United Kingdom (UK) 2017-2022

A 2022 survey conducted by the UK Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) found that 28 percent of the respondents in the United Kingdom neither support nor oppose fracking for the extraction of gas to generate heat and electricity. However, while almost 50 percent of the respondents to a similar survey did not have an opinion on the matter in 2017, this figure decreased over the past few years. In 2022, 25 percent of the respondents supported this method of extraction, while over 35 percent of them were opposed to it.

Survey methodology up to 2019 was a Kantar face-to-face omnibus survey. In 2021, a temporary Kantar online panel type of survey was introduced, which was not based on a random sample of respondents. The survey conducted in 2022 used a a push-to-web methodology, where the addresses of the respondents were randomly selected from the postcode address file (PAF) and completed the survey online or on paper. Due to a change in survey methodology, the source states that direct comparisons between time series is not possible.
