The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio measures the rate at which a bank's loans, such as mortgages, are not repaid. In the EU, the NPL ratio showed a decrease between September 2016 and September 2021. The Netherlands and Belgium followed this trend, with the ratio staying roughly the same in Luxembourg. A large part of the private debt in the Netherlands is comprised of mortgages.
