Benelux: non-performing loan ratio 2022

Each of the Benelux countries had a lower non-performing loan (NPL) ratio than the average for the European Economic Area in 2022. The NPL ratio measures the share of loans by a bank which have been past due for a certain period. In the EU, the NPL ratio decreases significantly between 2016 and 2022. The Netherlands and Belgium followed this trend, with their ratio reaching similar levels to that in Luxembourg. A large part of the private debt in the Netherlands is comprised of mortgages. During the past decades, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands have increased at a fast pace.
