NPL ratio in the Benelux region 2016-2019

This statistic shows the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio in the Benelux countries (Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) compared to the EU from September 2016 to June 2019. The non-performing loan ratio measures the rate at which a bank's loans, such as mortgages, are not repaid. In the EU, the NPL ratio showed a decrease between September 2016 and June 2019. Belgium followed this trend, with the ratio staying roughly the same in Luxembourg and the Netherlands. A large part of the private debt in the Netherlands is comprised of mortgages. Between 2006 and 2016, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands increased from approximately 548 billion euros in 2006 to approximately 664 billion euros in 2016.

Supplementary notes

The source states that "individual country data includes subsidiaries, which are excluded from EU aggregate. For example, at country level the subsidiary in country X of a bank domiciled in country Y is included both in data for countries X and Y (for the latter as part of the consolidated entity). In the EU aggregate, only the consolidated entity domiciled in country Y is considered. The sample of banks is unbalanced and reviewed annually."
