Italy: energy consumption 2018, by source
In 2018, natural gas was the main energy source in Italy. The consumption of natural gas energy amounted to 59.5 million tons of oil equivalent, whereas oil consumption was equal to 58.6 million tons of oil equivalent. Third in the ranking came energy from renewable sources. The consumption of energy generated from renewables added up to 31.7 million tons of oil equivalent.

Overall, the level of primary energy consumption decreased in Italy . More specifically, a steady decreasing trend occurred between 2010 and 2014. In the following years, the energy consumption gradually increased, yet not remarkably. Electricity demand was forecasted to gradually grow until 2024.

In 2017, energy was mainly deployed for civil uses , whereas in 2007, the most energy consuming sectors were the energy sector itself and transports. During the decade considered, the consumption of energy for civil uses increased from 43.2 to 48.4 million tons of oil equivalent.
