Texas houses far more proved crude oil reserves than any other U.S. state. As of 2020, there were nearly 16.7 billion barrels of crude oil reserves in Texas; the largest sources being the Eagle Ford and Permian basin. Alaska is the fifth-most oil rich state (when including the Gulf of Mexico), with more federal land having been made available for oil drilling by the outgoing U.S. government in 2021. Alaska's proved reserves amount to 2.4 billion barrels.
