Gas is the most common fuel type used for electricity generation in Ireland, accounting for over half of the total electricity output in 2020. That year, nearly 1.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent gas were used to fire electricity producing turbines. Meanwhile, usage of renewable sources increased from 161,000 metric tons in 2005 to nearly 1.2 million metric tons in 2020, in the latter year, this accounted for another 42 percent of Ireland's electricity generation.
