Most popular music streaming services in the U.S. 2018, by reach Apple Music was the most popular streaming service in the United States in early 2018, with a reach of 23 percent. Key competitor Spotify followed closely behind but failed to make the top spot, losing out to Apple by a one percent margin. Other services on the ranking include iHeartRadio, Shazam and SiriusXM.
Apple vs. Spotify: the ongoing battle

Apple Music’s worldwide subscribers hit 50 million in May 2018 and continues to grow, however Spotify reported 52 million premium subscribers back in the first quarter of 2017. Spotify’s subscriber base continued to soar and almost doubled between early 2017 and 2019, when the streaming service announced that it had reached 100 million subscribers worldwide. Spotify also commands the largest share of subscribers in the world, almost double Apple Music’s share and three times that of Amazon. Some sources report that Apple Music in fact has more paid subscribers in the United States than Spotify, but on a global level it is certainly the latter dominating the market.

Despite Spotify’s success, when taking a closer look at the U.S. market, Spotify tends to struggle, which is notable in a ranking of U.S. consumers’ preferred music streaming services. However, it was not Apple Music but Pandora which was considered the most appealing overall, with respondents in all but the 18 to 29 age bracket citing Pandora as the service they would be most likely to subscribe to.

Spotify also failed to make the cut in rankings on the most popular streaming services based on user types – the most recent data shows that Apple Music has more mobile only users than Spotify. The same study showed that the only instance of Spotify outperforming Apple Music in the U.S. was in terms of monthly sessions, though arguably by an impressive margin. Spotify’s average number of sessions per user per month was five times more than Apple Music’s monthly average – in fact Apple struggled against the majority of other streaming services in this area.

Whilst Spotify has become a behemoth in the global streaming industry, the company still has work to do in the United States if it is to nudge Apple Music off the throne as the market leader, but with a rapidly growing and prolific subscriber base, this time may come sooner rather than later.
