Between 2013 and 2016, there was an overall increase in the number of independent stores in Great Britain every year; however the number of stores started to decreased from to 2017. In 2019, the number of independent stores in Great Britain fell by 1,521 units. In that same year, the number of multiple (chain) stores fell by over 7,600 units.
