Coronavirus and healthcare system in Russia
In 2018, the per capita expenditure on healthcare in Russia was just over US$1500 which was less than many of the other developed nations in the world. During the same year, spending on healthcare as a share of GDP was also significantly less in Russia than in most of the other developed countries worldwide. The number of hospital beds per 10,000 residents decreased from 2008 to 2018 in Russia – there were almost 80 beds available for every 10 thousand people in Russia in 2018.
The Russian healthcare system has been put under intense burden by the coronavirus pandemic. After the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed there at the end of January, Russia, as of August 2020, has become one of the most affected countries by COVID-19 worldwide. More than 950,000 thousand cases of coronavirus have been confirmed until that point, and over 16,000 inhabitants of Russia have died from this pandemic.
