Distribution of payment methods use in the Netherlands in 2017, by age group This statistic shows the distribution of the total number of payment transactions in the Netherlands in 2017, by payment method and age group. Dutch consumers aged 19 to 24 years old preferred contactless payments the most, as opposed to older age groups which prefer cash money in their transactions. In the fourth quarter of 2017, the share of NFC payments of all debit card payments was approximately 48 percent. NFC payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014. It mainly involves contactless payments made at points of sales, with either a debit card, a mobile phone or payments via QR codes.
