Electrification rate in Indonesia 2010-2019

As of the third quarter of 2019, the electrification rate in Indonesia was at 98.86 percent. While this was an all-time high, it slightly missed the target for that year which was set at 99.3 percent.

Electricity infrastructure

Indonesian geography makes building and expanding the power supply a major challenge. The networks of countless islands need to be interconnected for a nationwide coverage. Currently, the archipelago has eight major power grids and around 600 smaller, isolated networks. Most of the networks are owned and operated by the state-owned electricity provider PLN.

Indonesia’s electricity mix

The energy mix differs depending on the size of the network and the consumption, however, overall Indonesia relies heavily on coal to generate electricity . In 2018, the Indonesian power generation by coal amounted to around 170 terawatt hours and was expected to reach around 294 terawatt hours in 2027. However, Indonesia has signed the Paris Climate Agreement and has therefore committed to increase renewable energies to at least 23 percent by 2025. In 2018, Indonesia generated around 5,857 megawatts from renewable sources , which corresponds to around 12 percent of the energy mix (872498).
