Electricity generation capacity in Indonesia 2014-2019

In 2019, the electricity generation capacity in Indonesia amounted to 69.6 gigawatts. It was projected that the country would need to generate about 502 terawatt hours by 2027. Meeting the growing electricity needs is one of Indonesia's biggest challenges currently.

Electricity providers in Indonesia

As of now, the state-owned electricity supplier Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) generates most of the electricity, accounting for around 69 percent of the power generation capacity, while the rest is accounted for by IPPs (Independent Power Producers) and PPUs (Private Power Utility). PLN also delivers the electricity generated by the IPPS and the PPUs. However, the government cannot make all the investments in this sector alone and must therefore depend on foreign investments. The PLN monopoly is currently being reviewed, and IPPs are now allowed to enter the market. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, about two thirds of the new electricity capacity is supposed to be generated by IPPs.

Electricity mix in Indonesia

Currently, more than half of the electricity generated in Indonesia is from coal, followed by natural gas, renewables and oil. The focus of the newly planned power plants is also mainly on fossil fuels. Despite the high potential of hydropower and geothermal energy in Indonesia, renewable power is not yet a main goal of their energy policy.
