Roast and ground coffee imports of Australia from FY 2014-FY 2019

Imports of roast and ground coffee products to Australia have seen a steady year on year decline; the 2019 financial year saw 150 thousand sixty-kilogram bags imported, a decline of ten thousand from 2018. Imports peaked in the 2015 financial year at 190 thousand sixty-kilogram bags.

Coffee bean imports and domestic consumption

Whilst imports of roast and ground have been in decline, imports of coffee beans have seen year on year growth. Bean imports reached 1.6 million sixty-kilogram bags in the 2019 financial year, an increase of around four hundred thousand since the financial year 2014. Domestic coffee consumption has also seen year on year growth in Australia. In the financial year 2019, approximately 1.87 million sixty-kilogram bags of coffee were consumed. Consumption has increased almost every year since the 2014 financial year, with the only exception being 2017 where consumption dipped slightly to 1.76 million sixty-kilogram bags.

Coffee shops and cafes

As a result of increased consumption, the café and coffee shop industry has experienced year on year growth in both the number of businesses and in the total revenue taken. The total number of businesses is expected to reach around 7.4 thousand in 2020, and revenues are expected to increase alongside this growth, reaching five billion Australian dollars in the same year.
