Personal liability insurance or "private Haftpflichtversicherung" was the most common insurance type in Germany in 2022. Almost 80 percent of German households had this type of insurance, which protects the policyholder from liability in the case of an unintentional injury to another person or damage to someone else's property.

This question was phrased by the source as follows: "Which of the following insurances does your household currently have?" (in German: "Welche der nachfolgenden Versicherungen sind in Ihrem Haushalt abgeschlossen?"). Fewer insurance types were specified in the 2022 survey results.
The number of respondents in the 2021 survey was similar, though it took the form of face-to-face computer-supported interviews and online surveys.
