With the two goals against France in the final match of the FIFA World Cup 2022, Lionel Messi increased his tally to 98 goals scored for Argentina's national team. Messi is the top goal scorer of all time for his birth country, almost doubling the second player on the list: Gabriel Batistuta.

The current captain of “La Albiceleste” – as the team is nicknamed – has supporters all around the globe. For instance, Messi was the world’s second most followed athlete on Instagram as of March 2022, only surpassed by the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi changed to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 after having played for FC Barcelona since his junior years. In the Spanish club, the Argentine footballer scored more than 600 goals, peaking in the 2011-2012 season with 73 goals.

The South American team has had a history of success in the FIFA World Cup. Between 1930 and 2018, Argentina won 43 soccer matches in the competition, more than half of the total played. The men’s team occupied the 5th position in the FIFA World Ranking at the end of 2021. Meanwhile, the women’s team didn’t fare as well, occupying the 34th position in the same year.
