The total number of applications for refugee recognition submitted in Japan fell to approximately 3.77 thousand in 2022, down from about 19.6 thousand in 2017. Refugee applications became a gateway to the Japanese job market after the government started to provide work permits for applicants in 2010. Due to an increasing number of applications in the following years, Japanese authorities turned to prioritizing those applications likely to succeed from 2018 onward and accordingly restricted work permits to those applications.
