Share of people in favor of referendums in the Netherlands 2017, by education level This statistic displays the share of people in favor of referendums in the Netherlands in 2017, by level of education. Respondents taking part in this survey were asked what they think of referendums. Roughly 60 percent of the total respondents stated to be in favor of referendums. Of the participants with a high education, this was only 45 percent. Between 2015 and 2018, the Netherlands experimented with consultative (non-binding) referendums. Two referendums were held about the European Union association agreement with Ukraine (2016) and the Intelligence and Security Services Act (2018), which both resulted in a 'no'. In 2018, the new Rutte III government abolished non-binding referendums in the Netherlands again.
