Latin America: busiest airports 2018

In 2018, the Mexico City International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez) served roughly 47.7 million passengers, making it the busiest airport in Latin America and the Carribbean. The São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (Aeroporto Internacional de São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governador André Franco Montoro) followed as the second leading airport in the region, with a total of 42.83 million passengers that year.

Mexico City Airport at capacity

With a roughly equal volume of arrivals and departures, the Benito Juárez airport of Mexico City serves as a significant international connection hub for all of Latin America, as well as domestic flights within Mexico. As the airport has hovered near capacity each year, plans for replacing it with constuction of a new airport have been delayed and ultimately canceled. Nearby Toluca has thus grown as an alternative, with the Toluca Airport’s total revenue increasing consistently since 2012.

Brazil’s metropolitan hub

São Paulo and its surrounding metropolitan area have more inhabitants than any city in Latin America and the Caribbean. Brazil’s largest municipality ranks fourth among the most populated urban agglomerations worldwide. The city is home to four airports in total, with not only one but two of the busiest airports in the Latin American region. With the seventh highest number of passengers in 2018, the traffic of the São Paulo/Congonhas–Deputado Freitas Nobre Airport is especially high for an airport that mainly operates domestic flights within Brazil.
