Colombia: FGM distribution in the Embera tribe
This statistic represents the distribution of women who were object to the female genital mutilation practice within the Amerindian Embera community in Colombia, as of 2017. In that year, it was reported that around 66.67 percent of Embera women were affected by the cultural practice and had undergone the procedure, which in most cases causes health problems like pain in every day life, infections and psychological problems and sometimes leads to death. The Colombian Ereba community was made aware of the violence and dangers of the practice and hope to fully erase the practice from their community by 2030. Nevertheless, FGM is also known to be practiced within other indigenous Colombian communities and in Peru and Panama.
