Fossil fuel sources (including petroleum, natural gas, and coal) represented more than 78 percent of primary energy production in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017. Petroleum alone accounted for nearly half of the region's primary energy production. That year, Latin America's primary energy production added up to nearly 7.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
