Consumption rate of benzodiazepines in Italy 2014-2022, by category
Between 2015 and 2020, the level of consumption of benzodiazepines in Italy increased. This increment was registered in each of the different categories of the drug: anxiolytics, hypnotics, and sedatives. According to the data, the category of anxiolytics was always the one recording the highest level of consumption during the period considered. In 2022, in fact, the consumption rate of anxiolytics was of 26.1 DDD (daily defined dose) per 1,000 inhabitants per day, whereas the one of hypnotics was 21.6 and of sedatives was equal to 6.0 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants per day.
