Charging stations supplying normal charge under or equal to 22 kilowatts were the most numerous charging type found across the United Kingdom in 2021. There were approximately 28,200 such stations in the country that year, up from about 27,200 the previous year. In contrast, Combined Charging Systems (CCS) were the leading fast charging stations.
A necessary element to modern infrastructure, the availability of electric energy supplying outlets is paramount to the continued success of electric vehicles in a world looking to turn away from fossil fuels.
Total number of charging stations
In total, 10,616 charging locations for electric vehicles were spread out across the United Kingdom by January 2020. Figures steadily increased between March 2018 and January 2020, with the greatest single jump recorded between February and March 2019. This might be related to the general performance of car sales in September 2020. As it is one of only two months a year when the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency releases new registration plate numbers, car sales tend to reach their annual peak in that month. With officials looking to provide the best possible infrastructure to drivers in the country, the distribution of more charging stations seems natural.
EVSE’s worldwide
Globally, China provided the greatest number of publicly available electric vehicle chargers (EVSE’s) in 2020. Some 807,000 such outlets were in use. This was over eight times the amount recorded by the second entry – the United States. Of European countries, most EVSE’s were found in the Netherlands.
