The eSports market in Mexico is on the rise and projected to hit a market value of over one billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2021. At the forecast growth rate, this market is set to generate approximately 1.34 billion U.S. dollars in 2024.
The show is just getting started
eSports, short for electronic sports, is a type of competition played in a multiplayer format through video games as an individual or a team. Officially recognized as a sport in Mexico in February 2019, eSports has become wildly popular in the North American country. According to a 2020 study, about 11 million Mexicans were deemed to have watched professional video game tournaments online that year, and 8.4 million reportedly took an active part in them as competitors. Far from being unique to Mexico, interest in competitive gaming is also attracting millions of viewers in Latin America. In 2020, the eSports audience in the region was anticipated to hit 55 million viewers, a figure which is expected to reach 70 million by 2022.
Twitch, the place to be for gaming enthusiasts
Whether it be an individual gamer or a major competition, eSports are often consumed through live streaming broadcasts. Twitch, founded in 2011 and acquired by Amazon in 2015, is the leading gaming viewing platform worldwide. Across Latin America, the service saw an overall increase in downloads with the outbreak of the coronavirus in 2020. In Mexico, for example, Twitch app downloads peaked after containment measures were put in place to fight the pandemic, reaching more than 420 thousand downloads by April of that year. Furthermore, both Mexican and Latin American players have strongly marked their presence on the platform. So much so that, although English is the most spoken language on Twitch, Spanish ranks second, accounting for more than 11 percent of gamers on the platform.
