Leading UK banks by number of customers 2007-2017

This statistic illustrates the number of bank customers in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2007 and 2017, by select leading UK banks. For Lloyds Bank Group, Barclays, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Nationwide, there was an increase of overall customer numbers between 2007 and 2017. Lloyds (including Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Scottish Widows) increased their number of customers by approximately 11 million.

Customer numbers

Assessing the total number of customers a bank has can be a good sign of its size although it can also be misleading. For example, HSBC UK reportedly had eight million customers in 2017 (retail banking and wealth management customers only) despite HSBC Holdings (parent company) leading in several key performance indicators (KPIs) not only in the UK but also in Europe. Overall there were an estimated 53.7 million individuals in the United Kingdom with a bank account of some description.

Banking products

In the UK, the share of adults that had a credit or debit card as of 2017 were some of the highest across Europe. Customers in the United Kingdom have adopted online and mobile banking quite quickly. In fact, for several banking activities, UK residents now use digital banking as a preferred method.
